Boilers fitted, serviced and fixed across Sheffield

Boilers fitted, serviced and fixed across Sheffield

Heating engineers based in Barnsley, working across Sheffield, a straight run down the M1 from our base.

There are three main jobs we do for Sheffield homes. If you need a boiler installation in Sheffield, we visit first, look at where the boiler and flue can go, and talk you through the type of boiler that suits your home. See our boiler installation page. If your boiler is still going, a yearly boiler service keeps it safe and catches worn parts before they let you down. And if it has stopped, our boiler repair engineers find the fault and tell you straight whether it's worth fixing or time to replace it.

What Sheffield's hills and soft water mean for your boiler

Sheffield is built on hills, and that shapes a lot of boiler work here. On a steep terraced street the front of the house can sit at road level while the back drops a storey, so the boiler and its flue often end up in an awkward spot. Before we quote for a new boiler, we check where the flue can safely go, how close it would be to windows, doors and the house next door, and how the condensate pipe will drain.

The higher western suburbs, such as Fulwood and Dore, get colder and windier than the city centre. A condensate pipe that runs outside is more likely to freeze there in a cold snap and lock the boiler out. Keeping the outside run short, using wider pipe and lagging it all help.

Sheffield's water comes soft off the Peak District moors, so limescale is less of a problem than in many towns. The bigger worry in older systems is sludge, which builds up in radiators and pipework over the years and can shorten the life of a new boiler. We'll check whether your system needs cleaning before a new boiler goes in.

Terrace, semi or detached, the right boiler is different

Sheffield's housing changes a lot from one side of the city to the other, and so does the right boiler.

In the Victorian terraces of Sharrow and Crookes, the old boiler is often in the kitchen or a back room with little space around it. A compact combi usually fits well and frees up the airing cupboard, as long as enough water comes into the house to run a shower and a tap at once.

The 1930s semis in Hillsborough and Fulwood often still have a hot water cylinder and a tank in the loft. With one bathroom, a combi can work well. With two bathrooms or a busy household, a system boiler with a cylinder usually gives better hot water. We'll check your water pressure and flow before we suggest either, and explain why.

Bigger detached homes towards the Peak District edge need more heat, so sizing matters. Too small and the far rooms stay cold. Too big and the boiler wastes gas switching on and off.

When your boiler stops, or your gas check is due

Many breakdowns are things a yearly service would have spotted early: a diverter valve failing on a combi, so you get heating but no hot water, pressure that keeps dropping because of a small leak, or sludge leaving radiators cold at the bottom. If your boiler has stopped, book a boiler repair and we'll find the fault and explain your options.

Sheffield has a lot of rented homes, especially student houses near the two universities. If you let a house or an HMO, the law says every gas appliance needs a safety check each year, and your tenants need a copy of the record. We carry out gas safety inspections and can issue the Landlord Gas Safety Certificate. Booking the boiler service on the same visit saves a second trip, and the summer gap between tenancies is a good time to get both done.
