Vaillant F28 fault code: what it means & safe fixes

Understand what the Vaillant F28 fault code really means, what you can safely check yourself and when it is time to call a Gas Safe engineer.

On Vaillant boilers, the F28 fault code usually indicates a failed ignition or that the boiler has failed to start properly. This means the boiler tried to light but didn’t detect a flame. It can become urgent if you lose heating or hot water, if you smell gas, or if your carbon monoxide alarm goes off. In these cases, turn off the boiler immediately. Do not keep resetting the boiler, open the casing, or attempt any gas repairs yourself. Instead, contact a Gas Safe registered engineer for a safe and professional inspection.

F28 fault code meaning on Vaillant boilers

When your Vaillant boiler shows F28, it is telling you it has tried to light, but the burner flame has not been detected. The boiler locks out for safety and will usually refuse to start until the fault is cleared.

This is almost always related to ignition or gas supply issues, rather than an electrical problem in your home. Sometimes it is a simple supply interruption, but it can also indicate a developing fault that needs a Gas Safe engineer.

Main causes of Vaillant F28 faults

There are several common reasons your Vaillant will show the F28 fault code. Some are temporary and resolve once the cause is removed, others need parts or adjustments from an engineer.

Gas supply interruption or issue

If the boiler is not getting enough gas, it cannot light reliably and F28 appears. This might be a brief interruption in the gas main, a closed gas tap, or a problem with the meter such as prepayment credit running out.

More serious causes include a partially blocked gas valve or undersized pipework, which must only be checked and repaired by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Low boiler pressure

Modern Vaillant boilers will lock out when the system water pressure is too low. If the pressure drops far enough, the boiler may try to start, detect a problem, then show F28 along with other fault behaviour.

This can be due to a small leak in the heating system, a recent radiator bleed or a fault with the expansion vessel. Repeated pressure loss should always be investigated professionally.

Condensate and flue-related issues

On Vaillant condensing boilers, waste water (condensate) runs away through a small plastic pipe. If this pipe becomes frozen outside in cold weather, the boiler may not be able to run correctly and can lock out with an ignition-related code.

Flue problems, such as blockages or damage, can also interfere with safe ignition. These are safety-critical parts and must not be tampered with by anyone unqualified.

Ignition and flame sensing faults

The boiler relies on a spark electrode to light the gas and a flame sensor to confirm the burner is actually alight. If either of these is dirty, incorrectly positioned or faulty, the boiler may spark but fail to detect a stable flame.

Sometimes an internal wiring or control board issue affects the ignition sequence as well. All of these are technical issues which require an engineer with the correct test equipment.

Air in the gas line after the supply work

After work on the gas network, meter or pipework, there can be trapped air in the gas line. When the boiler attempts to light, it initially draws air rather than gas and fails to ignite, giving an F28 code.

In some cases, this clears with a single reset once the supply is fully restored. If F28 keeps returning after gas work, an engineer should check the system for you.

Safe checks you can do now

There are a few basic, non-intrusive checks you can safely carry out before calling for help. Do not remove the boiler casing or touch any gas components. If in doubt, stop and call a professional.

  • Check there is demand: Make sure the room thermostat is turned up, and the boiler is set to heating or hot water as required.

  • Confirm other gas appliances work: If you have a gas hob or fire, see if it lights normally. If nothing gas-related works, there may be a supply issue.

  • Look at the pressure gauge: On most systems, the needle should be around 1.0 to 1.5 bar when the system is cold. If it is near zero, do not keep resetting the boiler.

  • Reset once only: Use the reset function or button once, following your manual. If F28 returns, do not repeatedly reset it.

  • Check the external condensate pipe: In freezing weather, look at the plastic condensate pipe outside for obvious ice buildup. Do not dismantle anything, but note any clear blockage or freezing for the engineer.

If the boiler starts and runs normally after these checks, monitor it over the next day. If F28 appears again, book an engineer visit rather than relying on further resets.

When to stop and call a Gas Safe engineer

Some F28 situations need immediate professional attention. If you notice any worrying signs, switch the boiler off and leave it off until it has been inspected.

  • You can smell gas anywhere in the property

  • The boiler keeps locking out with F28 even after one reset

  • You see dark marks or soot around the boiler or flue

  • Your carbon monoxide alarm is sounding or beeping with a warning

  • There are young children, elderly or vulnerable people in the home without heat or hot water

In these cases, do not attempt to open the boiler, adjust gas valves or bypass any safety devices. A qualified Gas Safe engineer can check gas pressures, combustion quality and internal components safely.

Common questions about the Vaillant F28 fault

Can I keep resetting my Vaillant boiler when F28 shows?

No, you should not keep resetting an F28 fault. One careful reset after basic checks is usually acceptable, but repeated resets can mask a serious problem and place extra stress on the boiler.

If the fault comes back, treat that as a clear sign that professional diagnosis is needed rather than trying to force the boiler to run.

Will running with an F28 issue damage the boiler?

The boiler is designed to lock out to protect itself, so it will usually not run continuously with an active F28 fault. However, repeated failed starts and resets can cause wear to ignition components and the control board.

Fixing the root cause promptly will generally be kinder to the boiler and may reduce the risk of more costly repairs later on.

Is an F28 fault on my Vaillant boiler dangerous?

F28 on its own is a safety lockout message and does not automatically mean there is a dangerous gas leak. In many cases, it is related to supply or ignition issues that are inconvenient rather than immediately unsafe.

However, any fault involving gas, combustion or flue performance has potential safety implications. If you notice gas smells, soot marks or carbon monoxide alarms, turn the boiler off, ventilate the area and seek help straight away.
